We support the Voice referendum and the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

Posted by Bianca S on 2 June 2023

Australian Parents for Climate Action gratefully and humbly accepts the generous invitation extended by First Nations people in the Uluru Statement From The Heart to walk together in a movement of the Australian people for a better future.

We are proud members of Allies for Uluru. We support the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Australian Constitution through the Voice to Parliament as the next step on the journey towards better outcomes for, and greater respect, collaboration, and healing with, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

As a national community organisation we seek to build a shared future in which all families in Australia have agency and respect for our natural environment, including Traditional Custodians and First Nations families who care for land and sea Country as their ancestors have done for millenia, and who we can learn so much from. It is not just that First Nations peoples deserve a voice to be heard, but that our society must make space to listen. It is through listening to First Nations peoples and organisations on all sides of this debate that we have reached our position on the Voice proposal, and we commit to continuing to listen and learn in the lead up to and beyond the referendum. We encourage everyone to seek the information they need to form their own views on the First Nations Voice to Parliament referendum.

First Nations communities are disproportionately affected by the impacts of climate change and the extraction of fossil fuels - the biggest drivers of climate change. And without appropriate design, climate solutions can also have adverse impacts on people, places and nature. It is critical that we listen to, respect and learn from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, understandings and perspectives on how to manage our shared natural and cultural heritage while we urgently implement solutions to reduce climate harm in ways that ensure more equitable outcomes for people and communities.

Australian Parents for Climate Action accepts the deep responsibility that is upon all of us, as voters, parents, and stewards of our children’s world at this critical time, to ensure that all Australians and their cultures can thrive. We recognise that writing YES is an opportunity to improve the lives of First Nations people. Just as we understand that parents know what’s best for their families, we understand that First Nations peoples know what’s best for their communities, and deserve the right to be heard by Parliament on the matters that affect them. Evidence has repeatedly shown that better outcomes are achieved when solutions to First Nations issues are designed by or with First Nations peoples. You can learn more here about the proposed First Nations Voice to Parliament and how you can get involved with the Yes23 campaign.
